How to Find a Babysitting Job

Advice on finding a Babysitting JobBeing a babysitter is a great way to earn a few dollars but it is serious work since you are responsible for the life of another person.

Most never have a problem but when there is one, they are responsible for making sure the kids are safe.

Babysitting however can fit almost any schedule especially if you’re a student.  The trick however is not just finding a babysitting job but the job you want.

Here is how you can find a babysitting job:

Be Qualified

Parents are looking for someone mature, responsible and qualified to look after their kids and the best way to do that is to take a recognized babysitting course.  Many are available through national associations, churches, government agencies and private companies.

Babysitting courses teach the fundamentals of handling and dealing with newborns, toddlers and pre-school aged kids.  They offer instructions and advice on almost everything from changing diapers and clothes to feeding and putting the kids to bed.

Many babysitting courses offer first-aid and CPR training which is very attractive to parents.  Putting a bandage on a scrape is one thing but knowing exactly what to do if there is a serious injury is why you are there.

If available in your area, have a police or security check done from the proper authorities.

When parents needs to choose a babysitter, having the right qualifications will help you get the job.

Networking for Younger Babysitters

Networking is something business people do to meet other business people in hopes that they can work together.  The same goes for babysitting.  Let the people you know, that you are available to babysit.

For younger babysitters, your parents or relatives are your best chance of getting a babysitting job.

Family members will let people they know who have kids that you are available but you should only accept work from people that your parents or relatives actually know such as friends and co-workers.  For safety reasons, avoid accepting work from complete strangers.

We do not recommend using any other method to find babysitting jobs if you are under the age of 18.

Networking for Older Babysitters

Word of mouth is the best way of advertising that you are available to babysit.

Have your family, friends, co-workers, fellow students and teachers know that you are available.  What To Do With The Kids offers a number of business cards designed for babysitters that you can hand out and to give to people so that they can hand them out for you.

Flyers

A flyer can be thought of as an advertisement for your babysitting services.  Usually printed on a regular piece of paper, it should have your name, contact information, qualifications and availability.  A catchy graphic and some color is nice but keep in mind that the purpose of the flyer is to let people know who you are and that you are available to babysit.

If you live in a residential area, you may want to place one in the mailboxes of homes you know have or think they may have kids.

If you live in an apartment building, ask the manager if you can place a flyer near the mailboxes or in a common area such as a lobby or even the elevator.  Remember to get permission first.

Some supermarkets, post offices, libraries, colleges, universities and coffee shops have community bulletin boards that may let you post a flyer.

Babysitting Agencies

Agencies are very popular and may help you find the babysitting jobs that you are looking for.  Many offer training and classes while others are booking agents.

Agencies are always looking for qualified babysitters but do your research first and make sure to read the fine print on any agreement you sign.

Online

There are many local advertising websites such as Craigslist and Kijjijji but be very careful.

There are a lot of Facebook groups as well that you can join that try to match parents with babysitters, especially at the last minute.

Always Be Careful

Unfortunately, there are a lot of bad people out there so you must take precautions especially when you don’t know the person.  You should always meet with the parents and the kids at their home first before accepting any babysitting job.

Have someone take you to the appointment and wait nearby.  Tell the people you’re meeting that you were dropped off and someone will be picking you up shortly.

If you arrive at the home and you are told that the mother and kids are not there then reschedule for another time.  The best way to NOT be in a bad situation is to avoid one.

If you feel uncomfortable for ANY reason, leave immediately.

Ideally you will find a few families that trust you and can count on you to do a great job but that doesn’t mean you can’t network.  Leave the family a couple of business cards in case they have a family member or friend looking for a babysitter.  Your current customers are usually your best sales people and in most cases, they would be happy to recommend you to someone they know.
