Face Painting Makes Any Event Special

Face painting 2Kids love having their faces painted.  Everything from a simple design on the cheek at a birthday party to a full facial for Halloween is a lot of fun.

When there are a handful of kids at a small get-together, having someone do a few designs on the kid’s cheeks works well but when you have an event such as a large birthday party, community picnic or family reunion, hiring a professional face painter is the best way to go.

Face painting itself is not a hard thing to do.  Doing it safely, quickly and with great results is what a professional can offer.  Unfortunately many people look at the expense and decide that they can do it themselves or ask someone they know who can draw to do it for them.  Unfortunately, that can turn out to be a disaster.    When your guests look back at some photos, will they see a big mess on their kid’s or a nice design?

What To Do With The Kids® polled a number of face painting professionals from across the United States and Canada and asked them what people should know when booking a professional face painter for their event.  A number of things to be considered include:
..

Price:  Hiring someone based on the lowest price is not always the best choice.  Keep in mind that you are not paying for someone to just paint faces; you are paying for someone who knows how to paint very well, quickly and knows how to deal with kids.  A professional face painter will actually add value to your event.

Some may charge an hourly rate while others may charge per client.  If it is an hourly rate, clarify if this includes set-up and tear-down.  A written contract is strongly recommended so that the organizer and the face painter both know what is expected of each other.  Ask about their cancellation or rainy day policy as well.
..

The Artists:  Face painters are artists who work on a moving canvas and the better ones will be able to do great work in a short period of time.  Ask about their experience, artistic training, and references, insurance and for a valid police check.  Make sure you are speaking with the artist who will actually work your event and ask if they will be using other face painters and ask about their credentials as well.  Also ask about the face painter’s wardrobe.  Some may dress in a costume while others may just wear regular street clothes.
..

Paint:  Professional face painters only use FDA safety-rated paints that lessen the chance of skin reactions.  Most professionals do not recommend using the cheap paint and crayons available at the discount stores as these may cause skin irritations and may not look or wear very well.   Professionals will never use acrylic or house paints.
..

Hygiene:  Professional face painters understand that hygiene is an extremely important part of their business.   Ask about their equipment and how they keep it clean.
..

What Type of Artwork Can They Do:   Professionals will have a portfolio of designs that they offer.  It is important however that you see actual photos of the face painter’s work and not just a bunch of stock images or drawings taken from the internet.  It’s also important that you approve any designs they’ll offer at your event since some images may not be appropriate.
..

Expected Number of Clients & Time Frame:  How many people do you expect and how long will you need the face painter for?  Keep in mind that for most professionals:

–  A small design can take about 2-4 minutes

–  A more detailed design can take 6-8 minutes each

–  A full face design can take 20-30 minutes

This however should only be used as a guide and should be discussed with the face painter.   They will make suggestions on the amount of time needed and may suggest bringing in another artist to work with them.

Keep in mind that face painters will also need time to clean their equipment and take breaks every once in a while which must be considered when planning your event.  You don’t want to have your guests standing in line for a long time.
..

What Equipment is Supplied:   Another important factor to discuss is what the face painter might need from you as the organizer.  Many professionals have their own tables and chairs but some may not.  Do you need to supply a table, chairs and will there be a clean water source nearby?  If the event is outside will the face painting be located under a tent?
..

Location, Location, Location:  It is recommended that the face painting area be located away from a heavy traffic area and that there is sufficient room for them to work.  Keep in mind that there may be a line-up of people waiting so you don’t want them blocking aisles or high traffic areas.

Crowd control is something that you should plan on.  Some people become impatient and don’t like waiting their turn.  Having an entrance to the face painting area with ropes can help keep people in line.  You also want the face painters to concentrate on painting and not crowd control so it’s a good idea to have someone standing by to help out.
..

The Kids:   Many face painters will not work on a kid under the age of 3 since their skin is very sensitive.  They will also not work on a kid who cannot hold their head still.  If an adult has to hold a kid’s head still, it might be a better idea to have a design painted on their arm or hand.  If a kid is uncooperative be prepared to remove them and try to bring them back later.  Face painters will not paint on what they consider to be open sores or irritated skin despite what some parents may say.
..

The Face Painter’s Questions:  Professional face painters want to contribute to the success of your event and will ask you questions about the event itself.  They will want to know about everything we’ve discussed above as well as the purpose of the event and theme.  Based on this information, the face painter may make some suggestions that will make your event even better since in most cases, they have attended more of these types of events than you have.
..

Having a professional face painter working their artistic magic on the kids will bring an extra feeling of excitement to your event.  What To Do With The Kids® has recently created a directory of professional face painters for adults on our website along with directories of clowns, magicians, entertainers and balloon professionals.
