Materials Needed:Volcano

Plastic or disposable cup, newspapers, paper mache paste, cardboard, paint, varnish or lacquer, baking soda, vinegar, red food coloring.

Place cup in the middle of the cardboard. Crumple up newspapers into balls and place around the cup.

Using strips of newspaper and paper mach paste begin to add layers starting from the top of the cup down to the cardboard. Having the crumpled paper at the base of the cup will help form the volcano. Allow to dry.

Paint to look like a mountain. Allow to dry.

Apply a coat of varnish and allow to dry. Repeat.

Place a tablespoon of baking soda in the cup. Add red food coloring to a quarter cup of vinegar.

To activate the volcano quickly pour the vinegar into the cup. The vinegar will react with the baking soda, foam up and spill out.

Brian says:

“Don’t do this inside the house. I did it when I was a kid and my Mom had me scrubbing pots in the kitchen for a month!
